What Is Practitioner Research?

Welcome to the PRiME site - the site which encourages and disseminates practitioner research in music education. You can read reports and publish your practitioner research here - email me for details.

Practitioner research in education is not just educational research, much of which consists of attempts to find answers to questions that teachers and other educators don't ask. Practitioner research, by contrast, is undertaken by teachers into their own teaching.

The term "Practitioner research" is more or less synonymous with "action research". Teachers and other practitioners choose an aspect of their own practice. They plan and carry out improvements, evaluate these and reflect on the evaluations in order to plan new improvements.

The process is generally seen as cyclical:

Plan Act Evaluate Reflect

In practitioner research, acting includes collecting data, and evaluating includes analysing the data.
By carrying out this cycle practitioners generate knowledge that can be useful to others.
